If you spill someone’s drink, you buy them another; if you break someone's window, you pay to fix it.

However, every time a wildfire rips through a town, every time water floods a home, every time heat waves drive up energy bills and hospital visits - we pay the price.

The oil, coal and gas corporations who fueled the extreme weather? They pay… NOTHING.

• Five oil and gas companies made over US$100 billion in profit in 2024 alone.
  

• 82.1 million people in South Asia were affected by weather-related disasters between 2019 and 2023.
  

• Climate-related loss and damage in South Asia could cost USD 518 billion by 2050.

This isn’t just unfair - it’s outrageous. It’s time to make them pay.

By making polluters pay, we can:

1. Protect people’s health: Fund emergency services to help people during climate disasters.
2. Prioritising fairness: ensure people living in the greatest poverty, with least responsibility for causing the climate crisis, will be supported with the revenues raised.
3. Equip first responders: Provide the tools and resources needed to respond to escalating wildfires, floods and heatwaves.
4. Make homes and infrastructure climate-ready: Strengthen homes and city infrastructure -  roads, rail and utilities - to better withstand extreme weather.
5. Provide a financial safety net: Ensure disaster relief and rebuilding efforts are funded so families aren’t left paying the bill. 

The Polluters Pay Pact is calling for bold taxes and fines on greedy oil and gas corporations and other polluters to make them pay for the damages they have caused and help communities in South Asia to recover, rebuild and invest in climate solutions.
